With the sun at your back and dust on your feet, you’ll be feeling the summer vibes of Woodford Folk Festival 2019. With its usual mecca of over 2,000 local, national and international performers and presenters, this year’s program is sure to delight. Here are three unique performers you should check out, along with session with Australia’s favourite scientist, Dr Karl!
Just last year in 2018, Tia Gostelow released her debut album Thick Skin which won Album of the Year at the Queensland Music Awards, scored triple J feature album, saw her sell out a national headline tour in Australia and perform at Falls Festival, South by South West (USA) and The Great Escape (UK). This year, Tia took out The Triffid’s Album of Year Award and has secured two performances at the Woodford Folk Festival.

Neil started his career as a journalist in the early 1980s. Soon he began writing comics, including the award-winning and enormously influential Sandman series, and met Terry Pratchett with whom he wrote Good Omens. Since then he has become the multi-award winning, #1 New York Times Bestselling author of over a dozen beloved books for adults and children including American Gods (now an Emmy-nominated TV Series) Coraline and Stardust (two of several works adapted for film) as well as an award-winning scriptwriter for Doctor Who and cameo feature in cartoon form on The Simpsons, Arthur, and in real life on The Big Bang Theory. In 2017 Neil became a Goodwill Ambassador for UNHCR, the United Nations Refugee Agency. Originally from England, he lives in the USA where he is a Professor in the Arts at Bard College.
On January 1 from 5:30 pm, story spinner, mythmaker and word-weaver Neil Gaiman opens up the Hilltop to the glory of a tale told well. Join one of the world’s most innovative, imaginative and charismatic storytellers during the first sunset of the New Year.
Kate is an award-winning singer-songwriter who traverses the worlds of contemporary pop, folk and opera. Her debut opera as a composer, The Rabbits, won four Helpmann awards, she co-wrote the music and lyrics to Muriel’s Wedding: The Musical, and was Australia’s representative at Eurovision 2019.

For over 30 years, Australia has known Dr Karl as that guy in the media, particularly the radio, that loves science. With over 44 books to his name and being recognized as one of Australia’s 100 National Living Treasures, Dr Karl Kruszelnicki is heading to Woodford Folk Festival as a guest speaker. Presenting three times on the Luna stage, Dr Karl dives into subjects like renewable energy, how technology works and fixing climate change.

Not just a space for teens and adults, the Woodford Folk Festival caters well towards younger children. The Children’s Festival precinct within Woodford Folk Festival is a secluded space for those little ones and runs from 8 am to 5 pm each day. From puppet shows to crafts and games, theatre to circus and dance, there are more than 55 acts presenting more than 260 performances and workshops.
