Osprey House Environmental Centre

Want a chance to try wildlife photography without a day of bushwalking? Looking to learn about sustainability and the environment in a fun and engaging space? Take a day trip to Osprey House Environmental Centre in Griffin, and get back to nature in suburbia’s backyard.

A Nature Walk With a Difference

The Moreton Bay region is home to a staggering variety of wildlife, and if you’re not up for a long bushwalk, it’s still possible to meet some of our local wonders. If you’re looking for a free day of learning with the family, or an artist date with your camera, look no further than Osprey House Environmental Centre.

Getting to Osprey House

Osprey House is located on Dohles Rocks Road in Griffin, a short drive from North Lakes. From Brisbane, it’s a 40 minute northern drive along the Bruce Highway and across the Pine Rivers Bridge. Take the Griffin exit, turn right at the T- junction, and follow the signs to Osprey House.

Stay for Lunch

Osprey House has BBQ and picnic facilities available to guests. For those not wanting to cook, Westfield North Lakes is less than 10 minutes away, with a range of café and take away options to suit all tastes.

Get Up Close to Wildlife

Osprey house is a sanctuary for the resident osprey family, but the centre’s grounds are home to a wealth of wildlife perfect for photographers at all skill levels.

There are three main bird viewing areas: the amphitheatre, the hide, and the lookout, allowing for multiple vantage points to get that perfect photo. Predatory birds such as eagles and kites are often sighted, and a range of migratory shore birds visit the area annually. When it’s quiet, kingfishers make for amazing photo opportunities.

Koalas are frequent visitors to the grounds, oftentimes incredibly close to visitors. Please remember, though, that they are wild animals, and should never be touched or approached.

As with all bushland areas, there are snakes, and though it’s incredibly rare to see them at Osprey House, the usual precautions should be taken.

Yali Moyum (Tell the Message)

Yali Moyum is a short and idyllic trail through the grounds, which explores the connection between the natural environment and our local indigenous communities. Through the walk, visitors can learn about the significance of six environmental features of the area, and the impact they had on local life. Children are invited to try their hand at plaque rubbing, with paper and crayons available from the Environmental Centre.

Learn About Moreton Bay’s Ecosystem

As well as being a sanctuary for wildlife, Osprey House is an education centre for families, as well as school and community groups. Open from 10am till 4pm daily, the Environmental Centre’s hardworking volunteers are on hand to answer questions, or give presentations about a range of subjects, including local ecosystems, and sustainability.
